Background

Lanzerac Wine Estate is situated at the gateway to the Jonkershoek Valley.  The wilderness area at the head of this valley is a favourite area for hiking, mountain biking and fly fishing.  Lanzerac was established as a farm in 1692 as the farm Schoongezicht.  The first cellar was constructed in the early 1800’s.  What followed was an fascinating history in which the farm was transformed into a high end producer of wine and luxurious hotel.

You can read a more detailed history of the estate in the button below.

At the end of 2023 the management kindly permitted me to present my watercolours in an exhibition in their White Wine Cellar.   Part of my portfolio for 2024 is a set of watercolours all about the Estate.  These will be posted here as they are completed.

The Watercolours

watercolour of a tree and house

Lanzerac Manor House #1

This painting was completed while a stood in the White Wine Cellar during my exhibition at the end of 2023.

The large oak in the Manor House garden dominates the route between the Reception and the Spa.  This is most apparent in Winter.  The branches stand out against the sky, framing Botmaskop and the Manor House.

Each species of tree has a particular shape in the main branches and orientation of the twigs as the new growth reaches for the light.

Eerste River flowing past Lanzerac Wine Estate

The Eerste River rises in the mountains surrounding the Jonkershoek Valley. The watercolour shows the river flowing past the bottom end of the Lanzerac Wine Estate. The river is still full from a rainy Winter.

This watercolour drew on my love for loose, throw-it-on washes as well as my love for the minute details that tell small stories – like about the water flowing around the rocks. Water flowing around rocks, I find it mesmerising.
