Here is how my latest Brandberg painting is looking – still lots to be done but this is a nice way to look with a different eye.
What do you think?
The sky is way blue – I will have to find a way to tone that down. But it is slowly taking shape.
these big paintings are a mission – 1500x1020mm
I like how you are handling the rocks in this one Stephen. The splatter on the sand around the rocks make the earth look very believable in this. Is the sky never that blue in Africa?
Hi Leslie – good point – I am planning to complete the rocks with a good dose of blue to see if the painting balances better – thanks for the input. S
Another wonderful Brandberg painting! I like the blue of the sky. What color blue do you use? If you want to lighten it up, you may be able to wet it and then “scrub” the paper with a paper towel or old brush to try and lift the watercolor.
I saw what you wrote to Leslie. I think putting some blue in the rocks might be nice to balance the sky.
The blue is a mixture of Cobalt Blue and French Ultramarine – so it has a nice grainy effect which I would like to keep if I can – I will decide on a scrub out when I have finished the rocks – but I will lose the texture. It is already looking more balanced – and we do get deep blue skies – so – lets see…
Cheers hey Carol
Wow! Look at these rocks, they really look like rocks! My! You must be a very patient man. Fantastic job. And they are not boring, there is a lot to look at in these rocks. I also love the massive rock formation in the back. This is a VERY impressive piece; it really gives that wonderful feeling of space and infinity…
Hey Isabelle — thanks hey – this is encouraging – it is such a special place to me too. S
I don’t want you to change anything – it looks so bright and hot – I’ve seen skies like that in Africa all the time – can almost believe that I could run my toes through that sand. You’ve painted a superb painting here Stephen and I love the different perspective with the detailed rocks. I hope you’ll put the two up together in your gallery eventually so that we can view them together.
mmm – thanks June – this is very encouraging and useful – I will keep going on this tack. There is still much to do. S
I like the way blue sky, Stephen. And the rocks are beautiful. Looking at your latest paintings, it looks like you are moving to brighter colours.
That could be – i have just loaded my pallette with colours like Cobalt Turquoise and quinacridone gold and green gold. I have two tubes of Ultramarine Violet which I am humming hahing about – I can mix the same with Alizarin and French Ultramarine – Cheers Cecily
