Description

Rock Pools at the Source of the Lourens River

The Lourens River seeps out from a spring at the bottom of a small cliff face in the Hottentots Holland mountains. The water trickles down to collect in small pools in the jagged rocks at the top of the ravine.

Diepgat cave is behind me at the top of the kloof, an excellent foul-weather sleeping spot.

The rocks around the pool are sharp and angular. These rocks have fairly recently (geologically speaking) broken off from the surrounding cliff and shattered on the way down to the floor of this ravine. As these rocks make their way down-stream they are rounded off.

The mouth of the river is in the picture, feeding into False Bay – though it is hard to see in the haze.
