Pools and Rapids on Lourens River
Painting rivers is a great challenge. Reflections and refraction convey the information but require careful observation.
In preparing for this painting I sat quite often at this rapid to sketch the river in watercolour – and enjoyed sitting in the rapid in the bottom left as a relief from the blistering heat of Summer.
In the watercolour I have tried to capture everything going on in a river: The reflections of the sky, the refraction of the rocks under the water, the still pools and rapids.
