Description

Old Bridge over Lourens River

The Old Bridge, built in 1845, is the second oldest bridge in South Africa.  It is quite solid but is not currently in use.  The bridge is built with blocks of Sandstone which makes it a beautiful structure.  There are hoof marks in the cement on the bridge of the first horse to cross the bridge – I guess before they put up traffic cones.

The new bridge constructed to carry the current traffic load was placed right next to this old monument.  It is a little unfortunate, but I suppose the city were constrained by land use.
