Gaaitjies on The Lourens River
The informal settlement in the flood-management culverts under Main Road in Somerset West.
“Gaaitjie” is the diminutive form of “Gat” in Afrikaans which means “Hole”.
But, as in these things, it loses a lot in translation.
The group who live there are sometimes a little dangerous and I narrowly avoided being mugged going over the bridge on the way home early one evening.
I used this watercolour in the 2023 Lourens River Calendar.
